Description2	【日本語訳】手取本町、三四番地［一八］九二年九月十一日親愛なる西田－　昨日午後一時五分に戻りました。道路が嵐でずいぶん被害を受けていましたので、岡山へのルートは取ることができませんでした。それで、倉敷へ行き、そこから尾道へ汽車で行き、そこで三光丸という立派な汽船に乗りました。偶然海軍士官学校生の一群に出会いました。素敵な若者たちは学校へ帰る途中で、呉までわたしと一緒に旅をしました。もしもいつか海軍兵学校に空席ができれば、わたしはそこに入ろうと努力するつもりです。そこは、給料が良くて、楽な所です。でもこの前の外国人教師は、そこに十年いました。学校は島にあります。わたしが会った生徒たちは皆英語をとてもよく話しました。乗っていたのは十三人でした。　人力車の旅は、ひどく退屈でした。でもわたしは、珍しいものをたくさん見ましたし、風景は大抵とても見事でした。　帰宅したらあなたからの珍しい贈り物が二つ届いていました。あなたは、いつか例の大変素晴らしい「梅の種」の話をしてくださる約束をされましたね。それを知りたいものです。そのようなものは、これまで見たことがありません。本当に心から感謝申し上げます。セツがよろしく申しました。これは大変短い手紙ですが、またすぐ書くつもりです。　つねにあなたの友　ラフカディオ・ハーン　わたしが馬関に着いたときには、品川丸も三河丸も、まだそこには着いてはいませんでした。境の代理店を信用しなかったのは幸運でした。日本語訳：常松正雄『ラフカディオ・ハーン西田千太郎往復書簡』（八雲会、2020年）より

Sept.　 11th　　ʼ92 Dear Nishida:— Got back here yesterday, at 1:5 p.m. I could not take the route to Okayama, as the roadway had been much damaged by storms,—so went to Kurashiki, and thence took the train to Onomichi, where I caught a good steamer,—the Sanko-Maru. At Onomichi I fell in with a party of naval cadets—magnificent boys,—returning to their school; and they travelled with me as far as Kure. I am going to try to get into the Naval Academy if ever the place becomes vacant. It is an easy one with a good salary; but the last foreign teacher was ten years there. The school is on an inland. All the students I met spoke a good deal of English. There were thirteen on board. The kuruma trip was horribly tiresome; but I saw many curious things, and much of the scenery was very beautiful. On reaching home I found two curious gifts from you. You promised to tell me the story of that very remarkable “plumflower stone” some time. I would like to know it. Never saw anything like it before. Many kindest thanks. Settsu sends best remembrances. This is a very short letter; but I will write soon again.
